Stellar Flare Sweeps Up Exoplanet's Atmosphere : NASA Video

br/>The exoplanet HD 189733b lies so near its star that it completes an orbit every 2.2 days. In late 2011, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope found that the planet's upper atmosphere was streaming away at speeds exceeding 300,000 mph. Just before the Hubble observation, NASA's Swift detected the star blasting out a strong X-ray flare, one powerful enough to blow away part of the planet's atmosphere.

The actual size of the sun is represented by the white disk.The transit of Venus begins June 5, 2012, at about 6 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, or about 10 p.m. Universal Time. It will last for approximately 6 hours.

Chase Plane Video Of Historic SpaceX Dragon Splashdown

During the re-entry of SpaceX's Dragon capsule, NASA and the United States Navy flew a P-3 Orion Cast Glance aircraft to capture airborne views of the spacecraft's descent. The aircraft, based at the Navy's VX-30 squadron at the Naval Air Station Point Mugu, Calif., was able to record Dragon's re-entry, parachute chute deployment and the capsule in the water. Dragon splashed down at 11:42 a.m. EDT on May 31 in the Pacific Ocean, more than 560 miles off the coast of Baja California. During its mission, Dragon became the first commercial spacecraft to rendezvous and berth with the International Space Station, paving the way for future commercial cargo delivery flights.
